Program
65 independent and assisted living units and future adult day services were programmed for a resort-like setting for upper income seniors. Commons facilities include an indoor pool, dining hall and terrace, grand fireplace, exercise facilities, and walking path around a pond.
A complex and politically-charged approval process required thoughtful and strategic presentation.

Site
A large, beautifully wooded lot along the edge of the Kennebunk River was selected, just outside of the historic resort town of Kennebunk, Maine.

Solution
The local heritage of the town, Captain’s Mansions, inspired the design of the commons building. A rustic forecourt humanizes the scale of the large complex, with duplex units forming a natural courtyard around a pond and putting green. Cottages align the Kennebunk River bank, affording spectacular views and access to nature. Duplexes and cottages include attached garages and private gardens.
