Hand Up Homes for Youth Learning Center

  • Jefferson County, Colorado
  • Adolescent learning and staff training center
  • 2,700 s.f.
  • $400,000 estimate

The program included large staff training space, classroom space, media room, and administrative space. The building was to serve the joint functions of in-house staff training and classroom space for at-risk adolescents who were housed in the Client’s nearby residential treatment buildings.

A rural site adjacent to residential treatment housing was selected.

The rural context and the character of the client’s proposed adjacent housing buildings suggested a building design incorporating farmhouse vernacular architecture. A deep porch wraps three sides of the building and creates an extended outdoor space. The two main large spaces of the building, the training room and classroom, are vaulted with high windows, bringing in much natural light and opening the space of these rooms. A stone base anchors the building to the landscape.
