Corvallis Alzheimer's Assisted Living

  • Assisted living level dementia/memory care
  • 30,000 s.f.
  • $4.2 million estimate

This 1992 American Institute of Architects Fellowship pilot study project focused on creating the most responsive, homelike and innovative environment for those with dementia. 33 one bedroom/alcove and 3 two bedroom units and commons space were included in this 3 story building.

A community-centered site adjacent to the city park and neighboring shops, college and churches was selected.

A single-loaded courtyard scheme allows residents to see all of the building from the glazed corridor, facilitating orientation within the building and to the outdoors, and providing a safe and meaningful wandering path. The courtyard creates a safe outdoor wandering garden with raised planting beds and flowering trees that orient residents to time of day and year. The corner drum form houses shared spaces and is seen from within as a memorable orientor. Staff retreat with kitchen and outdoor space offers staff a break from taxing work.
